Today we celebrated the accomplishments and successes of the graduating class of 2014. We are extremely proud of these courageous young women as they embark upon their high school careers!

WSG was honored to have Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby of the DC Court of Appeals address the community during the ceremony. Judge Blackburne-Rigsby is an accomplished woman of courage who has dedicated her career and life to the pursuit of justice both as a lawyer and a judge. A graduate of Duke University and Howard University School of Law, Blackburne-Rigsby has been recognized for her exceptional work by numerous appointments and awards. She currently serves as the president of the National Association of Women Judges, and is involved in numerous service organizations. Judge Blackburne-Rigsby delivered a thoughtful and entertaining address instructing the graduates to identify their passions, develop their voices, and live up to their potential.

Several students were honored during the ceremony, including Valedictorian Octavia Coleman, Salutatorian Kharan Pierce, and special award recipients Aliyah Buckman (In the Spirit Award) and Natavia Huff (Kathy Shorter Service Award. WSG also recognized the dedicated service of Mary Lynn Shanahan, recipient of the WSG Best Friend Award for her role as a volunteer, mentor, and philanthropic supporter of the school.

On Thursday, June 6, WSG promoted the 5th grade class during a special promotion ceremony. These students will transition to THEARC Campus starting in the fall.

The program featured WSG alumna Quanise Wooten, Class of 2009. After WSG, Quanise attended Potomac High School in Maryland, where she achieved Honor Roll all four years, was inducted into the National Honor Society, and was elected Vice President Parliamentary of her class. She graduated 5th in her class and now attends University of Maryland College Park, where she is pursuing a degree in Accounting. Ms. Wooten encouraged the promoted students to participate in everything they can during their remaining years at WSG, to always maintain a strong sense of self respect, and to always stay motivated to action.

During the Promotion Ceremony, students also bade farewell to Campus Administrator Charlene Hursey, who will retire at the end of June after over 40 years as an educator in Southeast Washington.
