As the President, I’m often asked what it is that makes the Washington School for Girls such a special place. What is it that draws so many people to the school - why do students, parents, teachers, program partners, volunteers, and benefactors feel so passionately about this community?

I can’t speak for each person, but I love so many things about WSG. A few things I can’t help but shout about from the rooftops are that…

Our girls know they belong

When it comes down to it, no school can be defined by its curriculum, its campus, or its list of programs alone. What makes a school special is the magical interaction of the people who make up the community, and what it feels like to be part of the community. Students need to feel safe, valued, and respected to learn. Students learn best when they know that they belong, that their teachers and peers are cheering alongside them in their successes and are there for them through their challenges. Each person in our community is encouraged to bring their full, authentic self to school each day, and the result is a culture that supports and affirms each student and staff member.

Our teachers inspire joy and curiosity.

There is nothing I enjoy more than having an opportunity to visit our classrooms. Our teachers are creative, engaging, and thoughtful educators who take the time to get to know each and every student in their classrooms. They foster a learning environment where students feel confident both in sharing what they have learned and in asking questions when they don’t yet understand. They also allow students to be creators and leaders in the classroom - student voices are ever-present. Long after a specific lesson fades away, students will always carry the joy of learning with them.

Excellence takes many forms.

I am constantly reminded of the diverse talents of our students and teachers. Our community values excellence, and we strive to be a place where students can discover their strengths and passions while developing a strong foundation of skills across the board. At the root of all excellence is a willingness to try new things and applying a growth mindset to each endeavor. I love seeing students take pride in their accomplishments - whether they have earned Honor Roll, successfully led their peers during a special project, nailed a dance routine for a school showcase, or won an election for the Student Council. We know that every student who comes through our doors is capable of success, and we want to be a partner in helping her to keep reaching higher.

God walks with us every day

As a Catholic school, we celebrate the many ways that God is within each of us, surrounding us, and guiding us each step of the way. The Holy Spirit is in our hallways, our classrooms, and in the heart of each member of our community, not just during Morning Prayer, but throughout the day. Our families choose us because we are a school that nurtures the spirituality of our students alongside their minds.

I have only scratched the surface of what makes WSG a distinctive learning community. As you explore our website, there is more to learn about our founding and history, our approach to learning, and our student-centered programming. Be sure to visit our Admissions page to schedule a visit, or our support section to learn more about how you can get involved.

We look forward to welcoming you to our community!
