Our school is devastated by the loss of Kelley Lockard. Ms. Lockard was a dedicated educator at WSG for 17 years, making her among the longest-serving staff members in the history of the school. She started her tenure as a beloved Math teacher before moving into school leadership and eventually becoming Principal. As a leader, Ms. Lockard was instrumental in developing many of the programs that are now a hallmark of our school: she was an early and enthusiastic advocate for our balanced calendar, launched our House system at THEARC, and most recently was leading the charge to transform our school’s approach to discipline through the implementation of a restorative justice model. Like any teacher-turned-administrator, her brightest moments of the day were those that she was interacting with students and alumnae.
Ms. Lockard once shared that she was motivated to become a math teacher by her desire to help students move beyond their comfort zone, particularly girls who may be socialized to avoid math despite their potential to succeed. Her biggest impact may have been that she took every opportunity to let her students lead, both in the classroom and the school community overall. Her spirit is irreplaceable and she will be deeply missed by our students, alumnae, family community, staff, volunteers, and partners.
WSG hosted a community remembrance on March 17, 2023. We also have created a virtual remembrance wall where our community can share their reflections about Ms. Lockard.
