2026 Girls Go Global Day 4: Beginning Our Retreat

We arrived in Felixstowe this morning after a three-hour ride, reaching the Convent of Jesus and Mary in time for a lunch of chicken and chips. The girls were warmly introduced to our gracious hosts, Sister Joan, the convent’s Superior, and Carol, who helps manage the house. After settling into their rooms, they quickly made friends with Snowy, Teddy, and Scamp, the sisters’ friendly dogs.

Once everyone was settled, we took a short walk into town, where the girls enjoyed an hour exploring Felixstowe’s main street. With many shops selling candy, records, antiques, books, and more, the girls found a lot of fun items.

Back at the convent, we had tea and donuts before gathering in the chapel for the opening session of our retreat. This year’s theme centers on the Book of Ruth and the idea that each of us is a vessel for God’s spirit and love. Through readings from 2 Corinthians, Jeremiah, and Genesis, we reflected on the image of being clay in God’s hands, shaped with purpose and filled with His grace.

Continuing this theme, the girls took part in a clay art project led by Sister Sheila, a former artist and art teacher. Each girl created two clay pots, one to keep and one to share with students from St. Claudine’s Catholic School for Girls, who will be joining us tomorrow. The girls showed their creativity, designing pots in the shapes of hearts, stars, and flowers.

Afterward, we gathered for a dinner of pasta with tomato sauce, and then ended the day with a Taizé service, a candlelit time of prayer, music, and quiet reflection. It was a peaceful and meaningful close to our first day in Felixstowe, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the girls from St. Claudine’s tomorrow.
