Day 1: London Calling
We’ve arrived in London! After the months of planning, it’s so exciting to finally be here. Once the girls said their goodbyes at the British Airways counter, we made our way through security without any issues. With plenty of time before our flight, the girls explored the terminal, grabbed a bite to eat, and then boarded our large, two-level plane. It was an exciting first for all of us, as none of us had ever flown on such a big plane! The flight itself went smoothly, and most of the girls managed to get some rest during our overnight journey.
Our plan for the first day was to keep moving so the students could adjust to the time zone and avoid falling asleep too early. After clearing customs (which was also without issues), we met our transportation and made our way from Heathrow Airport to central London. It was a beautiful drive through the city, though many of the girls were still feeling sleepy!
Our hotel is in a great location, just minutes from some of the biggest sites in London. After checking in and storing our luggage, we headed out for lunch. On our way, we passed through Parliament Square, where the girls got their first look at the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey. We crossed the Thames River and made our way to a fish and chips shop near the London Eye ferris wheel, where everyone refueled. Choices ranged from traditional fish and chips to chicken and chips and a burger with chips!
Next, we walked back towards the hotel, stopping at the nearby Tate Britain Museum. This free museum houses an impressive collection of British art. The girls completed a creative project where they took photos and videos that captured their experience in the museum. It was a relaxing way to wind down the day. By this point, the girls were definitely getting tired, so we walked the short distance back to the hotel where they settled into their rooms.
For dinner, we gathered at the hotel’s restaurant. Afterward, the students journaled and reflected on their first day in London. Some of the things they noticed included that people drive on the opposite side of the road, the variety of languages and accents they heard throughout the day, and how different the road signs and traffic lights look compared to home. The girls were in bed by 10 pm for well-earned rest.
Overall, it was a wonderful first day in London. The weather was sunny and warm, and the forecast shows that it will stay this way throughout the week. Tomorrow, we’ll head to St. Claudine’s School in the morning, followed by an afternoon tour of Brixton, a neighborhood known for its rich Afro-Caribbean culture, led by a local historian. We can’t wait to share more with you as the trip continues!
P.S. Keep an eye on our Instagram this week, as the girls will be doing a takeover!
